Estar frito

To be asleep or extremely tired

ES
Example

Ayer llegué y me quedé frito en el sofá con la chaqueta puesta.

When to use it

You get back from a very long bus trip, sit down 'just for a second' on the sofa and wake up three hours later with the TV still on.

What it means

In the literal sense it means 'to be cooked/fried', but on the street it's widely used to say you're completely exhausted and knocked out ('me quedo frito' = I fall asleep instantly). In Spain it's very common, and usually appears with 'quedarse' or 'caer': 'me quedé frito en el sofá' (I crashed on the sofa); it can also mean 'to be in trouble' ('como llegues tarde, estás frito'), depending on context. It has that funny quality of imagining yourself so tired that you've been dropped into a frying pan.

Don't confuse it with

"Estar frito" does not mean to be in serious trouble, to be completely confused, to be very embarrassed. It specifically means "To be asleep or extremely tired".
